Tata Experiences Pressure in Starbucks Joint Venture as Consumers Scale Back Spending

Tata Consumer Products is facing challenges in its joint venture with Starbucks, as reduced foot traffic in Indian cafes impacts its short-term expansion plans. With inflation affecting consumer spending, especially among city dwellers, demand for discretionary items like coffee and fast food has decreased. As a result, Tata Consumer’s CEO, Sunil D’Souza, mentioned that the company would “calibrate” its Starbucks store openings in the near term. However, despite these challenges, Tata Consumer remains optimistic about the future growth potential of its coffee business. The company is still focused on its long-term goal to operate 1,000 Tata Starbucks outlets by 2028, driven by India’s evolving coffee culture and low cafe density compared to other Asian countries like Indonesia and Vietnam. In addition to the slowdown in cafe traffic, rising raw material costs, including tea, are expected to squeeze profits in the short term. Despite this, Tata Consumer is forecasting double-digit revenue growth for the second half of the fiscal year. The company believes that, in the long run, the growing demand for premium coffee chains in India will drive significant growth for Tata Starbucks. Tata Consumer Products is confident that as India’s coffee culture continues to develop, the business will be well-positioned to capitalize on these trends and remain a key player in the Indian beverage market.
