PepsiCo Expands its Snacks & Packed Food Business in India: Catering to Regional Tastes & Innovation

The Indian snack and packed food market is witnessing rapid growth, and PepsiCo is at the forefront of this evolution. With a strong commitment to innovation and premiumisation, PepsiCo is set to expand its food segment, tailoring its portfolio to cater to the diverse taste preferences of Indian consumers. The company aims to enhance its presence by leveraging growing urbanisation and increasing disposable incomes, making packed foods more accessible and appealing to consumers across the country.

Understanding India’s Diverse Taste Preferences

PepsiCo acknowledges that India is not a single market but a collection of multiple regional tastes and preferences. To address this, the company has divided India into nine clusters, ensuring that its products align with regional taste profiles. For example, the famous Lays Magic Masala flavor is customized based on location—spicier in the South, slightly sweeter in the West, and uniquely blended in the North.

Similarly, PepsiCo modifies its snack ingredients to cater to different regions. The cooking oil for Kurkure varies; it uses mustard oil in the East and sesame oil in the South, ensuring authenticity in every bite. The choice of raw materials also differs, with rice being a key base for snacks in the South, while besan (gram flour) dominates in Western and Central India. This approach highlights PepsiCo’s dedication to crafting products that truly resonate with Indian consumers.

Investing in Consumer-Centric Innovation

PepsiCo is making significant investments in understanding consumer behavior, food heritage, and emerging trends in India. With an increasing focus on health and wellness, the company is actively growing its Quaker oats brand, competing with homegrown players like Marico’s Saffola. The demand for healthy snacks and nutritious options is rising, and PepsiCo aims to strengthen its position in this segment by introducing new products and expanding its portfolio.

Expanding Manufacturing & Supply Chain Capabilities

To meet the growing demand for its snacks, PepsiCo is expanding its manufacturing footprint in India. The company already operates facilities in Mathura (UP), Channo (Punjab), Ranjangaon (Pune), and Sankrail (West Bengal). Additionally, a new plant in Assam is set to become operational this year, along with two upcoming greenfield plants, one specifically catering to the South Indian market.

PepsiCo’s extensive supply chain is also backed by its collaboration with 27,000 potato farmers across India, sourcing over 400,000 tons of chip-grade potatoes from states such as Punjab, Gujarat, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam. The company’s Agro R&D Facility in Zahura, Punjab, plays a crucial role in potato breeding and improving the quality of raw materials.

Future Growth & Market Expansion

With packed food consumption still relatively low in India compared to global markets, PepsiCo sees immense potential for growth. By staying ahead of flavor trends, innovating based on regional preferences, and focusing on health-conscious snacking, the company aims to sustain its double-digit growth in the country. Whether it’s Lays, Kurkure, Doritos, or Quaker, PepsiCo is committed to delivering high-quality snacks that cater to India’s evolving taste preferences.
