Mid-sized global restaurant chains are finding the Indian market appealing.

In recent months, mid-sized global restaurant and cafe chains have increasingly targeted the Indian market, finding it more favorable despite a challenging landscape for larger international brands. As big-name chains grapple with declining same-store sales, smaller, strategically focused brands are capitalizing on opportunities in India. Notable new entrants include the Belgian bakery Le Pain Quotidien, French patisserie chain Laduree, the UK’s JD Wetherspoon, and Frank HotDogs. These brands are adopting a strategic approach, investing in select cities and keeping their store counts relatively modest—typically under 30 locations—to maintain profitability and manage operational costs effectively.

This shift is marked by more measured investments, generally in the range of 20-30 crore INR, a departure from the previous trend of large-scale, high-stakes market entries. For example, Bake & Brew has partnered with Le Pain Quotidien to re-enter the Indian market, committing 35 crore INR in its first year. The focus is initially on metropolitan areas, with plans to expand into smaller towns and explore opportunities in travel retail spaces such as airports and train stations.

Similarly, the French patisserie chain Laduree is launching a cafe at the Ritz-Carlton in Pune, in collaboration with the CK Israni Group, which has interests in home decor and construction. The partnership aims to expand Laduree’s footprint across other Indian cities, reflecting a strategic push to cater to a growing and diverse consumer base.

The success of these mid-sized global brands highlights a significant shift in the Indian food service sector. As consumer preferences move towards unique and varied dining experiences, brands are evolving to satisfy these desires. As wealth increases in India, mid-sized businesses are investing more in niche markets and exploring new opportunities, resulting in a more vibrant and diverse food and beverage industry.

In addition to international players, homegrown and specialty brands are also making notable strides. For instance, Brigade Group has teamed up with specialty coffee chain abCoffee to enhance food and beverage options within its properties, while First Coffee plans to open 35 stores by the end of 2024, focusing on delivery services and a minimalist store design. This trend of smaller, niche-focused expansions is expected to continue, with mid-tier investors driving growth and innovation in India’s vibrant food service sector.

Overall, the increasing presence of mid-sized global chains and the rise of homegrown brands underscore the dynamic nature of India’s food and beverage market, offering exciting opportunities for both investors and consumers alike.
